What does it say about us as a species that Richard Childress Racing, the team of cowboy-hat nepotism and NASCAR's only real gentleman racer, may win the Sprint Cup Championship? With zero wins for the entire team?

And he's only in the last race because of a dirty move that even he was clearly not proud of at all.

What does it mean that the contrived Chase/Playoff/Superbowl/forced drama thing doesn't work?

Implying that Paul Menard is a gentleman

They fucked up the championship. In my opinion it's that simple.
It's a last-man-standing deal. Somebody can be gifted a championship that way. "Whoops, wrecked that guy" is a way to manipulate the final order. That's bad.

pretty soon whoever wins homestead wins the championship. The first 35 races mean nothing. The chase is broken it doesn't work at all. I hope Newnan pulls it off because it will show NASCAR that it will never work. They have pushed wins as the way to win the championship, the guy with the most wins is out and a a team with none still has a shot because of good consistent runs week in and week out.

IIRC, Terry Labonte won the championship in 1996 with two wins, back in a time when Jeff Gordon and others were racking up in the high single-digits or more. Consistency pays off, no question about it.

The fact that a driver may win the championship without winning a race is what I like. The Chase, and the whole Cup points system, is supposed to push drivers to race for wins and not points. Glory or nothing! Drivers pushing for the win at every race drives up ratings, right! Gets you time on Sports Center, right! The fact that you can still potentially win the Cup without winning a race just makes me chuckle.

Same here. I hope Newman wins.
But what happens if he pops his qualifying engine? Then it's off to the back of the field where he has little chance?
Or what if he's caught up in somebody else's wreck or has a tire go down for debris?

Kenseth won it in 2003 with one win, 11 top 5's and 25 top 10's.

Methinks Ryan Newman went to college. See kids, look what knowing math can do for you!
